Panther fall 55-0 to OA/BC-IG

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

It was another rough Friday night for Bart Boustead's Panthers as Kingsley-Pierson got shutout by Odebolt-Arthur/Battle Creek-Ida Grove 55-0.

OA/BC-IG is one just six teams in Iowa football that has yet to allow a point as they shutout Buffalo Ridge two weeks ago by a 40-0 margin. That spelled bad news for the Panthers who have yet to put a dent on the scoreboard as they were shutout for the second consecutive week.

"We're going to go back to the basics and focus on blocking, tackling and running the ball - see if we can't put something together," said Boustead. "We did some things differently this past week against BC-IG and we moved the ball and had some success."

"For some it's their first varsity experience, they just need time to get used to it."

The Panthers managed to rack up 67 total yards on the ground as running back Paul Peterson racked up 51 yards on 19 carries on the night. Fullback Ross McNaughton had 7 rushes for 30 yards. However, quarterback Chris Olson was held to negative 14 yards rushing to bring the Panthers' rushing total down to 67.

Olson finished 2-14 for 24 yards in the passing game but was intercepted three times. Peterson had one reception for five yards.

Unfortunately, K-P could not stop O-A/BC-IG's strong rushing game as the hosts ran for 401 yards and five touchdowns on the Panther defense. O-A/BC-IG also managed to complete 4-5 passes for two more scores in the rout.

McNaughton led the defense with eight tackles including seven solo stops. Matt Steffan tied McNaughton with identical statistics. Todd Bottorf had seven solo stops in the loss. Alex Plendl and Evan Colfack both had five tackles for the Panthers.

Olson had a big night on special teams as he returned five kicks for 70 yards. Andrew Johnson had a return for 27 yards while Peterson had one runback for 17 yards.

"You don't get any better by playing teams that don't expose you," said Boustead. "Playing quality teams will definitely help us."

The Panthers will open up district play at home against River Valley who is coming off of a 46-0 blowout at the hands of Boyer Valley.

"They're a well-coached team. I'm sure they're going to be ready to go on Friday," said Boustead. "I think we've played two quality teams so far and I think it'll help us against a team like River Valley where we are a little bit more evenly matched. I really think that's going to help us on Friday night."
