Fire chief asks for flags at half-staff Sept. 11

Wednesday, September 10, 2008

The Le Mars Fire Chief is asking citizens to fly flags at half-staff Thursday, Sept. 11 in memory of those that died in the Sept. 11, 2001 attacks.

"We're trying to honor those that gave their lives, respect those who died," Schipper said. "I think it's vital that we continue a remembrance."

Nearly 3,000 people died in the attacks, including 343 firefighters, 23 New York City Police, 37 Port Authority officers and eight EMS personnel, Schipper said.

This year is the seventh anniversary of the terrorist attacks, where hijackers flew commercial passenger jets into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington D.C.

A fourth plane, allegedly headed for Washington D.C., was crashed in a rural Pennsylvania area after passengers and flight crew members attempted to retake control of their plane from the hijackers.

Read the United States Code. Fire Chiefs don't ask or order flags to be flown at half-staff. The story does not say the chief was reminding anyone, just that he was asking. It is entirely inappropriate for him to make this request if it is not already an order made by the president in accordance with the USC. We are a nation of laws, and it is sad when we casually disregard them. That is what those who attack us want us to do. Also, why the condescension? I never once compared the military to the fire department, but you must have missed what happened at the Pentagon. And I am completely confused by your comparison of December 7 and September 11.

The President has already declared Sept.11 Patriot Day and that flags be at 1/2 staff. The VFW puts out a very good calender that for each month has all the days marked that you SHOULD fly the fag and whether at 1/2 staff till sunset or untill noon. Fire depts are as much a BROTHERHOOD as the military is. If you remember, 343 of New Yorks BRAVEST from the FDNY lost their lives that day. For firemen its like their Dec 7th if you remember what that day is.For any FIREMAN to remind people to fly the flag at 1/2 staff on Sept 11 is very appropreate and noble

I believe the President of the US or a Governor should be making this request of us, but I am sure the chief's intentions are noble.
