"If you like what you've had for the last six years, vote for Steve King. But if you want change, vote for Ron Hubler."

This is the challenge Hubler, democratic candidate for the 5th U.S. Congressional District of Iowa, announced during a short stop in Le Mars Wednesday.

Hubler is touring the 5th District with Berkley Bedell, his campaign chairman who served 12 years in the U.S. House of Representatives, beginning in 1975.

They stopped at Lally's Eastside Cafe in Le Mars to visit with about 10 people during the one-day tour.

Hubler said his priorities, if elected, would be to serve on one of three committees: Agricultural, Veterans, or Energy and Commerce.

"All three are very vital to the district," he said. "In agriculture, I'd fight for the family farmer; with the Veterans Committee, I'd work for returning veterans from Iraq and Afghanistan; and with energy, I'd push for wind, wind, wind and more wind. Especially in the 5th District, renewable energy could be an economic gain for us."

His opponent in the Nov. 4 race, King, a republican, has held the seat in the U.S. House of Representatives since 2003.

"Our congressman now confronts and divides people, but we need to build coalitions, earn respect and get people to join in sponsoring bills," Hubler said. "You take on the establishment through cooperation, not confrontation."

Hubler, born in 1943 near Minneapolis, Kan., is the son of a Presbyterian minister, served in the U.S. Navy on nuclear powered submarines, and has been working in politics 40 years.

A representative, he said, needs to help people solve problems and seek solutions from them.

"The basic focus of being a representative is people. That's the kind of representation I've been offering," Hubler said. "People ought to be able to go to their congressperson and get representation. That isn't happening. Focusing on people is really where a congressman's responsibility ultimately lies."

I'm voting for Steve King because he has common sense and works very hard to help us keep more of our hard earned money. His watchdog abilities are second-to-none and he sees to it that our money is not being wasted on needless legislation buried in pretty packaging.

I have met Steve King and he does NOT have a "complete lack of respect for anyone who doesn't fall in line" with his views. Yes, he is very conservative and is not afraid to support his stance. It is unfortunate that people seem to be unwilling to discuss opposing viewpoints without taking offense or making personal remarks. Open dialogue is what built this nation and it is at risk with thinking like Hubler's article quote in which he said, "You take on the establishment through cooperation, not confrontation." If you feel strongly about something and have facts to back up your stance, you should never feel forced to compromise your beliefs to avoid an uncomfortable confrontation.

We are experiencing a similar division in Le Mars over recent school issues. You need to have people on both sides of the fence so that the masses, who sit ON the fence, can be as informed as they choose to be after hearing ALL arguments. People on both sides of our issue have great points which everyone should hear, investigate and use to make their own decisions.

I think it is a good thing that the office for 5th District is contested, simply because it allows the democratic process to work. Now, if we could get term limits in place, we'd be golden! God Bless America!

From everything I have heard and read about King, he will not be getting my vote either.

King shows his complete lack of respect for anyone who doesn't fall in line with his extreme conservatism. He is an embarassment to all of Iowa. Although I firmly believe that he is sincere about his extreme views I also think he likes the national press he gets because it.

Al voters, regardless of party should take a closer look at what King has done. In my opinon he's the only one in the current Congress that's willing to say what he is thinking and is generally in line for what is good for us. I won't argue that Congress is a national embarassment, but vote everyone else and keep King!

All voters, regardless of party, need to get behind Hubler and vote King out of office. Let's end our national embarassment now and have real representation in Congress.
