Offices closed for Labor Day

Friday, August 29, 2008

Americans will celebrate the country's 126th annual Labor Day, the three day-weekend that marks the unofficial end of summer.

There will be several closings in Le Mars for the day.

*No edition of the Le Mars Daily Sentinel will be published Monday, Sept. 1.

*All offices at Le Mars City Hall and the Plymouth County Courthouse will be closed Monday.

*The Le Mars Public Library will be closed for the three-day weekend, Saturday, Sunday and Monday, Aug. 30, 31 and Sept. 1.

*Garbage pickup in Le Mars will be one day late for the week, putting Monday's pickup to Tuesday and so on.

The first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on Tuesday, Sept. 5, 1882, after the Central Labor Union came up with the idea and planned a demonstration and picnic for that day.

The Central Labor Union wanted the holiday to break up the long length of time without a holiday between Independence Day and Thanksgiving. With workers working 12-hours days, seven days a week to provide for the families, the day off was welcome.

In the following years, workers took the day off unpaid in protest.

In 1894, following a strike by Pullman Palace Car Company workers, Congress passed legislation designating the first Monday in September as a federal holiday for workers, and President Grover Cleveland signed the bill into law.
