Merrill council urges 'Yes' vote for ISL

Wednesday, August 20, 2008

The Merrill City Council is officially encouraging people to vote in favor of the Instructional Support Levy (ISL) which would raise money for the Le Mars Community School District.

During its Monday meeting, the council passed a resolution stating its council "encourages all those eligible to vote YES" to the ISL.

The council based this resolution on the ideas that "education is the basis of a strong community," "a strong community attracts businesses, jobs and families" and that the Merrill City Council "wishes to see the community grow and prosper."

Kissinger Elementary, one of LCS's elementary centers, is located in Merrill.

According to the resolution passed Monday, Merrill's council also "encourages all city councils residing in the Le Mars Community School District to adopt a similar resolution regarding the...ISL."

The ISL, as proposed by the LCS School Board, would raise money for the school's general fund through a mix of instructional support state aid, ISL property tax and ISL income surtax.

Public informational meetings on the ISL are scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Aug. 27 and 28, in LCS's new Education Service Center at 940 Lincoln Street S.W.

Interesting, now if Le Mars City Council has the nerve to do the same it would be unbelieveable. All the improvements our Council talks about won't be needed if our schools go down hill. I guess this Council could buy the school like they did Westmar and then sell if off and make a lot of money as they did then. Win Win again.
