New charges filed against Holst regarding shotgun incident

Thursday, August 14, 2008

The man who allegedly shot at a car after reportedly being bothered by someone ringing his doorbell now faces two felony charges.

Gary Holst, 68, of southern Le Mars, was originally arrested Saturday night after two people complained to the Le Mars Police about gunshots that evening. Holst was charged with reckless use of a firearm causing damage, jailed, and released after posting his $2,000 bond.

Holst was arrested for a second time on Wednesday at 6:15 p.m. and charged with intimidation with a dangerous weapon, a class C felony, and assault while committing a felony, a class D felony.

"As a result of the investigation, they felt the additional charges fit," said Sergeant Tim Hop of the Le Mars Police on Thursday morning.

Holst was jailed Wednesday and later released when he posted the new bond of $10,000.

The maximum sentence for a class C felony is 10 years in prison and a $10,000 fine. For a class D felony, the maximum sentence is five years in prison and a $75,000 fine.

The police were assisted in the investigation and arrest by the Plymouth County Attorney's Office and the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office.

Holst cooperated with the authorities Wednesday, Hop said.

"I don't believe there was any problem as far as the arrest went," he noted.

According to the police, Holst shot at a car driving by his home at 1440 4th Ave. S.W. on Saturday night after feeling harassed by someone ringing his doorbell.

One of the individuals calling in a complaint Saturday stated that he felt pellets from a shell striking around him, according to the police report. The other complained about marks on his car from the pellets. The pellets had been reported on the 400 block of 15th Street Southwest, just around the corner from Holst's residence, according to the police.

Holst's shotgun was taken as evidence by the police.

This is moronic! If this dude thought it was reasonable to shoot at a kid, he should be put away. I can only hope that they don't take pity on him because he's old.

Dear Feelin Bad. I have known Gary for almost as long as you, do not have the same warm fuzzy as you at all. He scares me, his tirades scare me, and should scare the nighborhood. Time this grumpy old man looses his guns (hundreds of them) before people get killed.

I am sorry but I do not agree with feelin bads comments at all. In no way shape or form IF anyone was ringing his doorbell does that condone shooting at a kid and chasing him down the street for that matter. From what I have heard from many neighbors in that area he HAS terrorized many kids and people I know have seen him physically pull kids off his lawn and threaten kids with his gun and also a bat at times and that is FACT! So are you telling us that everyone of these kids have threatened him?? Also it is one thing for a kid to pull pranks not that I condone that but he is a grown man who knows better and apparently is not responsible with his firearms. There is no excuse for what he did whether he is a saint or not but I would have to say from how his neighborhood is so frightened by him that he is not the saint you give him credit to be! I guess it is nice he has a loyal friend to stand up for him but what he did was just wrong.

Pure speculation but here goes.

It takes time, thought, and some preparation prior to shooting at someone in a moving vehicle.

1. Get gun out of locked cabinet. (hopefully locked)

2. Get bullets.

3. Load gun.

4. Go outside and then shoot.

The point is there must have been some thought to do harm or shoot at whomever was ringing the doorbell. We live in the year 2008 not in the old west where the law was a six shooter. Had a jogger, walker, or anyone else been closer than whoever it was that felt pellets, the outcome could have been much worse. If he knew in fact it was that car and that kid he could have simply called the police.

I feel for the guy as well. However what he did was shoot at a kid, maybe the kid was ringing the doorbell but, that doesn't give anyone the right to shoot a freakin gun at someone, come on now! You would think at his age he would know that, apparently he doesn't and he should be charged, or taken away. I know that if I was a mother in that neighborhood I would feel threatened, even if this Gary guy is nice. The facts are that this man is dangerous and needs to be locked up or severely punished for his actions!

How many people do you see though pointing a gun and firing at someone? I surly don't around here. I do feel for the guy and maybe think he needs some help.

I kind of wonder how many of you people that are posting making fun of Gary Holst actually know him or the situation that actually occurred. I have known him very well for about the last 15 years of my life, and if he did do this he must have actually felt threatened by the actions of these teenagers. I know when i was a teenager i did some very stupid things that could have gotten me in some very deep trouble or even worse. How do we know that these kids didn't go up to Mr. Holst's house ring his door bell and threaten him. We don't. But automatically everyone is jumping on his back for what he supposedly did by shooting by the teenager.

And I'll tell u one thing. If he meant to hit the kid he would have hit him.

So for anyone who does not actually know the whole situation. Keep your mouth shut because that is how rumors get spread and everyone hates rumors going around about them. So how about everyone just keep your comments to yourself and mind your own business.

Thank god for that! Now I hope he gets the jail time so he does not harass our kids anymore. He needs to realize the pain and suffering he has inflicted on a young boy and he needs to live in fear and see what it feels like. I am sure there are many other kids out there that have been petrified of him for his previous actions he needs to move to the country where he will be around no one!
