More Business 75 sidewalks may get another look

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Council members could, at some point in the near future, be re-walking the topic of sidewalks for business areas along Business Highway 75 south.

Council member Delana Ihrke raised the likelihood of the walkways during Tuesday's council session having observed the increased pedestrian traffic in that area, she told fellow council members.

Councilman Ken Nelson, sharing with Ihrke that the topic had been a discussed action prior to her arrival on the council, also pointed out that an earlier scheduled one-year waiting period for city take-over of Business Highway 75 had now elapsed.

Nelson said it was perhaps time to revisit sidewalk issue and the safety value of the sidewalks in accommodating individuals using local hotels and motels and wanting to walk to restaurant or shopping areas along the highway.

City Administrator Scott Langel, joining the discussion by phone, pointed out that the highway funding for the earlier highway project did not extend to sidewalk construction and that cost any future sidewalks in the area will be a city responsibility.

Jason Vacura, code enforcement officer, added that earlier visits with some business owners in the area indicated their unwillingness to have a sidewalk program.
