Garage sale raises hundreds for flood relief

Monday, July 14, 2008
A garage and bake sale hosted this weekend by Perry and Sonni Cosby's family raised more than $500 for flood victims in Cedar Rapids.

The Cosbys and their three daughters held the sale at their house in southern Le Mars Saturday, inviting neighbors and friends to donate baked goods and garage sale items.

"The donations came in right away and kept coming and coming," Sonni said. "My husband was there the first night accepting the items and he was just taken away. We had more than enough."

Tables stretched along their driveway all the way to the street, she said.

The sale was busy all morning.

When the workers added up the total, it came to $535 and some odd cents.

The Cosbys are sending the money to Serve the City, a Christian organization that is assisting flood victims in Cedar Rapids.

"Their work is all volunteer work, so we knew our donation would really go a long way," Sonni said.

The leftover items from the sale will be delivered to Le Mars' Christian Needs Center.

"Thanks to the friends and neighbors that helped pull this off," Sonni said. "My husband and I are thrilled with the effort of our community."
