Sonni Cosby and her three girls decided they wanted to do more than just watch the flooding relief efforts in eastern Iowa on the news.

They wanted to help.

Now they're planning a rummage and bake sale on Saturday, July 12 with all of the proceeds going to help flood victims in Cedar Rapids.

"We were with our grandpa and grandma watching the news and we saw how many people don't have clothes and things," said Sonni's oldest daughter Jackie, 10. "We were thankful for what we had and felt sorry for the people that lost things."

The Cosby family has given donations before for other disasters around the world, but this one is close to home, Sonni said.

"If there were a disaster here in Le Mars we would need help, and we want to give that same help," Sonni said. "It's important to help people in our own backyard."

The Cosbys are asking people for donations of rummage and bake sale items. They will host the sale at their home in southern Le Mars, 1346 2nd Ave. S.W., from 9 a.m. until noon.

"We've kind of rallied our neighborhood with flyers," Sonni said. "And if somebody wants to help price things or set up, or donate a table to use for the sale, that would be great."

People can price their items ahead of time, or she will put price tags on herself, she said.

Rummage sale items will be accepted from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, July 9 through Friday, July 11 at the Cosby home.

Bake sale items will be accepted from 6-9 p.m. on Friday.

Whatever doesn't sell, the Cosby family plans to donate to the Christian Needs Center in Le Mars.

Anyone with questions can call Sonni at 546-1643 or 546-8886.

Sonni said she is glad her daughters are helping, handing out flyers and setting up the sale.

"I want them to be able to walk away from their summer knowing they helped someone," she said.
