R-U honored it's only senior, Alex Swalve, before the game and a crucial at-bat by the senior kept the Rockets in the game early. Unfortunately for the Rockets, the Rams had timely hitting late in the game and routed the home team.
With one out in the third inning, MV-AO, up 3-0, hit two consecutive batters, Jacob Fiedler and Jake Scheitler, to give the Rockets runners on first and second. Pitcher Brad Hodgen was able to single home Fiedler to put R-U on the board.
After a walk to Josh Bohnenkamp, Swalve came to the plate looking for a clutch hit to tie the game. However, patience at the plate paid off and the senior walked to score another run to cut the deficit to one. With the bases loaded again, the Rams' catcher attempted to throw out Hodgen leading off of third. An errant throw ended up in left field and Hodgen was able to score easily to knot the game at three.
That's as close as the Rockets would get as the Rams pounded out 13 more runs over the next four innings to steal a 16-3 road victory.
"We misplayed a couple of balls in the outfield and they had some timely hits," said R-U's Steve Neuberger. "It seemed like anytime they had a runner in scoring position then they hit it into the gap - just found green to hit into."
Hodgen took the loss on the mound after going six innings and giving up 12 runs - eight earned. The freshman walked one and struck out two.
"Brad was pitching well for us but they got four on us in the fourth," said Neuberger. "I still thought he was pitching well then. They had some hard hit balls hit some open areas but he was staying ahead of the hitters and throwing strikes all day. Six more in the fifth did it in for us."

Hodgen had the Rockets only hit.
"The pitcher did a nice job - he limited us to one hit," said Neuberger. "No matter how well your pitcher pitches, if you don't hit then it doesn't matter."
R-U was also in action last Friday as they traveled to play Battle Creek-Ida Grove in Maple Valley Conference action. Bohnenkamp was the losing pitcher as the Falcons tagged him for ten of their 12 runs in a 12-2 victory.
Bohnenkamp went four innings and gave up seven hits and ten runs - six earned. The freshman also walked three and struck out five.
Scheitler came on to pitch a 1/3 of an inning and gave up two runs - one earned - on one hit and a walk. The freshman also struck out one.
The Falcons struck for two runs in the bottom of the first and added five more in the home half of the third inning to take an early 7-0 lead.
R-U cut the deficit to five in the fifth inning with the help of an error. Fiedler led off the single with a double and was singled home by Hodgen. Two batters later, Jon Schreiner reached on an error and that allowed Hodgen to score to cut the lead to five.
However, BC-IG struck back for five more in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach as they went on to win 12-2 in five.
Hodgen was 1-3 with a RBI while Tom Miller was 2-2. Fiedler was also perfect at the plate with a 1-1 performance.
The Rockets fell to 4-10 in the conference and 4-11 overall. The team will travel to Sioux City tomorrow to play against Westwood at Lewis and Clark Park - the home of the Sioux City Explorers.
