The band will open the concert with "Flag of Victory," a march by Franz von Blon, under the direction of Jerry Bertrand.
Featured soloist for this concert will be trombonist Vance Shoemaker. Shoemaker is a native of Hawarden where he lives with his wife Jenni and four daughters on the farm settled by his ancestors in 1879. A graduate of Morningside College, Shoemaker has remained very active in the area as a member of the Sioux City Municipal Band for 41 years, Sioux City Symphony for 38 years, South Dakota Symphony for 26 years, Northwest Iowa Symphony for 25 years, and the Kansas City Lyric Opera Co. for six years.
Besides his fulltime farming occupation, Vance has been active as a low brass instructor at Augustana College, Dordt College, and Northwestern College. He has appeared as soloist with the Sioux City and Le Mars municipal bands, the Augustana and Dordt College bands, and the Elk Point and Lennox High School concert bands.
Shoemaker will be featured in a solo written by Gardell Simon in 1915 entitled "Atlantic Zephyrs."
Shoemaker will then be joined by trombonists Curt Ohrlund, director of bands at Le Mars Community Schools, and Jeff Burwitz to perform "Trombonanza" by Frank Cofield.
The band will continue the concert with "Where Never Lark or Eagle Flew" by James Curnow and based on the well-known poem by John Magee, Jr., called "High Flight." This will be followed by "Amazing Grace."
Next on the concert will be "Space Medley" which includes "Theme from Star Trek," "Theme from Close Encounters of the Third Kind," and "Star Wars (Main Title)." The band will then play "River Songs of the South," arranged by William G. Harbinson.
