The council, meeting in a closed executive session, approved a fiscal year 2009 salary of $118,119 for Langel, compared to his present salary of $113,850.
"They wanted to give him at least what the bargaining unit got," said Assistant City Administrator Bill Cole.
The bargaining unit, which includes most city employees other than department heads, is under a five-year contract and received the 3.75 percent raise.
Langel will also receive mileage for city business at the approved city (IRS) rate for the year.
Council members also gave approval to continuation of the current retainer fee agreement with city attorney Joe Flannery. The 2009 agreement, identical to Flannery's current rate includes a $7,000 monthly retainer based on a $180 hourly rate for attorney's work, a $125 hourly rate for work in the paralegal area and a $15 hourly rate for clerical work. Compensation for extra hours will be paid quarterly, effective July 1, 2008 through June 20, 2009.

Are you freaking kidding me??
What a waste of money...Lucky for him it isn't put to a public vote, and it was just decided by the well to do council members.
if it was put to a vote you think he would have a JOB
Scott deserves more than these comments. Sit in his seat for a while. Run a city with over 9,000 people to please. It isn't an easy job. Remember you get what you pay for. Scott and the entire City Staff do a great job for you. Keep that in mind when are able to turn on your water, drive on paved streets, have a safe community and beautiful parks. None of this comes free. I had the privilege of working with many of the city staff and thank every one of them. Le Mars is a great community, value what you have, it can be taken away in an instant. Don't gripe about what is wrong; ask what you can do to make your community a better place. Find your passion and volunteer for that cause. Your firemen (and women) do! Look at the time the Fair Board puts in to give you a week long celebration of your agriculture heritage. If you are not part of the solution you can't complain.
