A 52-year-old Kingsley man is in jail after allegedly lying to and threatening a deputy then trying to evade authorities while carrying a gun Friday morning.

Christopher Steven Mills was arrested after Plymouth County Sheriff Deputy Aaron Leusink came to Mills' home, 220 Rutland Street, at about 9:30 a.m. and attempted to serve him civil papers on a small claims issue.

Mills lied to the deputy about his name, according to Leusink.

"It seemed suspicious, so I left and confirmed that he was Christopher Mills, then went back," Leusink said.

Leusink returned and confronted Mills about the false information.

"He claims this is an issue that has been ongoing, involving identity theft, and he's been served papers before that weren't involving him," Leusink said.

After Leusink confronted him, Mills made threats of force toward Leusink and retreated into his home, according to the deputy's report.

At that point Leusink called for backup.

Deputies from Plymouth and Woodbury County and the Iowa State Patrol started to arrive on the scene.

At that point, Mills tried to leave through the back door of his home, carrying a handgun, Leusink said.

"He was ordered to drop his weapon, and he did. He laid on the ground when he was asked, and officers were able to take him into custody," Leusink said.

Neither Mills nor the law enforcement officers were injured in the incident.

Mills was charged with assault on a peace officer, a class D felony, and interference with official acts, a simple misdemeanor. He was put in the Plymouth County Jail with bond set at $5,000.

yikes. i just commented on this point in the case involving the struck pedestrian.

comments like "Mills lied to the deputy about his name" need to be placed in language that isn't so concrete.

'allegedly', 'according to police', 'deputies claim', etcetera are necessary when reporting unresolved criminal justice matters.

please update your writing style, sentinel!
