The Remsen-Union baseball team had a rough outing on Wednesday afternoon as they dropped a 7-1 decision to Marcus-Merdien-Cleghorn on the road.
Freshman Kraig Alesch took the loss on the mound and lasted three innings and gave up six hits. He walked six batters, gave up five earned runs and had two punch-outs.
Reece Harnack pitched the last three innings and gave up the final two runs. He scattered three hits.
"(Kraig) did a pretty good job. We don't have a really deep pitching staff so we're relying on some freshman to throw this year," said R-U's Steve Neuberger. "For never throwing before this year, he's doing an alright job. As the pitchers get a little bit more experience, they'll get better results as the season rolls on."
The Rockets had five team hits and scored just one run. In the first inning, freshman Jacob Fiedler had a double and senior Alex Swalve drove him in with a RBI single.
Swalve had two hits on the night. Josh Bohnenkamp, Alesch and Fiedler each had a hit for the Rockets.
"It was just one of those things," said Neuberger. "It's tough to score runs when you can't string many hits together and leave guys stranded on base."
The loss leaves R-U's overall record at 0-2 and 0-1 in the Maple Valley Conference.
The Rockets will travel to Kingsley-Pierson for a MVC game.
"We'll try to get in a little bit more batting practice," said Neuberger. "We need to try to get back on track in the hitting department. If we can be more consistent hitting and put the ball in play then we should be okay."
