Area law enforcement officers wrote up 29 tickets and 55 warnings Thursday in the first of several special traffic enforcement projects (STEP) planned for the summer season.
The 84 citations and warnings were handed out by the Plymouth County Sheriff's Office, the Le Mars Police Department and the Hinton Police Department in a two-hour period near the 24th Street exit of the Highway 75 Bypass.
From 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on the Thursday before Memorial Weekend, 18 officers handed out 25 speed citations and 25 warnings plus tickets for no seat belt use, driving while barred, driving while suspended and failure to file proof of liability insurance, along with other warnings including failure to yield for emergency vehicles and tinted windows.
The STEP is part of a state-wide project running from May 19 to June 1. The project is funded by the Governor's Traffic Safety Bureau.
According to a press release from the sheriff's office, their office and the Le Mars Police Department will continue to conduct STEP projects throughout the summer months.
