The Plymouth County Supervisors on Tuesday discussed amendments to the county budget from five county departments, which had greater expenses than estimated when the budget was put together 18 months ago.
The departments include the Plymouth County Sheriff's Department, the Mental Health Department, the Conservations Department, the Engineer's Department for the secondary road system and the Weed Commissioner.
One of the larger unanticipated expenses was a roof replacement and purchase of a gravel pit for the secondary road system. The pit was purchased in conjunction with Sioux County, and is expected to supply Plymouth County's granular products in the years to come.
The county engineering department's share of that expense was $718,000, which was not in its estimated budget.
Stacey Feldman, Plymouth County deputy auditor, said each of the departments' amended expenses will be paid for with money from sources within their individual budgets or reserve funds.
K. Kae Meyer, Plymouth County auditor, said because the annual budget is prepared months in advance there are generally amendments that have to be "cleaned up" by June 30, the end of each fiscal year.
"There are always unexpected expenses," Meyer said. "Things we didn't anticipate."
The supervisors scheduled a public hearing at 10 a.m. June 3 to invite comments on the amended budget before giving it their final approval.
