Young, Mahrt lead K-P to take third at MVC

Tuesday, May 6, 2008

Week five proved just as competitive as the previous four as the Maple Valley Conference wrapped up their regular season Monday afternoon in Odebolt.

Third place Kingsley-Pierson was led by Matt Young and Dexter Mahrt, who both shot rounds of 42.

But their low rounds weren't low enough as West Monona's Alex Maule took medalist honors with his round of 40.

Second place wound up a tie between Lawton-Bronson's Cody Skinner and Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto's Jared Boyer. The runners-up each had 41 strokes on their scorecard, but a playoff did not occur to determine the tiebreaker.

Close individual scores meant the team scores would also be close. Lawton took top team honors this week with a low score of 170. MVAO was second with 172 and K-P tied for third with West Monona at 174. The final team score, from Remsen-Union, was a 190, leaving only 20 strokes between the top and bottom this week.

Behind Young and Mahrt's pair of 42's was a round of 44 from Dallin Mahrt. Evan Klingensmith chipped in a 46 towards the Panthers' team score.

Despite the competitive scores, K-P coach Jon Mouw commented on the course conditions the golfers faced in Odebolt and mentioned how those conditions may have impacted all the rounds.

"Today we saw tough playing conditions," Mouw said. "The course is out in the country with nothing protecting it, so we were hit with a full blast of wind.

"When the low score in the meet is a 40, that tells you that the playing conditions are rough."

Mouw also credits Dexter Mahrt for his low round, saying that the senior was battling illness throughout the day. "But he came to school and toughed it out," Mouw said. "He had two triple bogeys, but other than that he had a good round and toughed it out."

Tyler Sudbeck and Dustin Slota had the pair of non-counting scores for the Panthers Monday afternoon.

"I'm pretty happy with how it went today," Mouw said. "I have no complaints."

The Rockets were led by Tyler Van Dam and a round of 44. Colin Sonnichsen recorded a 48 on his scorecard while both Tom Miller and Cody Leonard carded 49's for R-U.

Tyler Fiedler (55) and Jared Nitzschke (57) recorded the non-counting scores for K-P.

"We have been consistently shooting in the 40's," R-U coach Tim Klein said. "But we've just struggled to get down from 48/49 to 42/43, which is where we need to be to be really competitive as a team overall.

"It still comes down to that one or two holes throughout the round. Something happens and we lose focus for a couple holes. Not only does it hurt us there, it also hurts our overall score."

Final MVC standings will be released later in the week, and they will include the all-conference teams and the individual scores.

Next, both K-P and R-U prepare for their sectional at Hinton on Friday.

"It's always a toss up," Klein said of the sectional meet. "I don't think any of our guys have played this course before, so it will be interesting for them, but I think we have potential there."

Mouw believes his Panthers have potential as well.

"If we're there and we show up to play, we have a pretty good shot," Mouw said. "I would like to see us move our team score from the low 170s into the mid-160s. It would be really nice to see that."

Team scores:

Lawton-Bronson 170, MVAO 172, K-P 174, West Monona 174, BC-IG 177, Westwood 177, Woodbury Central 180, Odebolt-Arthur 182, Galva-Holstein 189, Remsen-Union 190, River Valley--no team score.
