Frericks, Lady Rockets look to top conference tonight

Monday, May 5, 2008

Heading into the final Maple Valley Conference golf meet tonight, hopes are high for Remsen-Union and Gina Mae Frericks.

The junior sits just four strokes behind West Monona's Cassie Stukenholtz, the conference's leading golfer.

The two have matched up very evenly this season, as Stukenholtz won the first place medal at three of the four meets and Frericks has been runner-up each week. With each of their highest scores dropped, Stukenholtz leads with a 128 and Frericks trails her with a 132.

Frericks needs to get the final edge tonight in Kingsley.

As a team, the Lady Rockets are seven points behind West Monona, trailing 37 to 44. In order to gain the advantage tonight, R-U needs their younger golfers to step up and shave some strokes off their scores. Right now, their next golfers are Kendra Howard, who is ina a four-way tie for 19th with a 166, and Jennifer Ruba, who is 22nd with a 168.

Kingsley-Pierson is closer to the bottom of the conference standings. With 15 points, the Lady Panthers are seventh. In order to reach their desired middle-of-the-conference finish, K-P needs to use their home-course advantage tonight and shoot some season-low rounds.

Amanda Dirksen needs to cut just a stroke or two to break into the top ten individually. Currently, she is tied for 11th with Galva-Holstein's Allie Wagoner at 157 strokes. Kellyanne Gunderson of Odebolt-Arthur is 10th with 154.

On the boys' side, the brightest hopes are for a pair of Kingsley-Pierson golfers. Matt Young is currently tied for fourth place in the individual race with 118. His rounds of 39, 44 and 35 match Battle Creek-Ida Grove's Alex Ernst.

Lawton-Bronson's Sean Richardson and Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto's Ethan Wolf are battling for the top spot, currently tied at 114.

Dexter Mahrt is also in the top 10. The senior is currently in a three-way tie for seventh with 121 strokes. MVAO's Dallas Heath holds a one-stroke edge for sixth place while another three are lingering in the shadows with a 10th place.

The Panthers sit in the middle of the conference as far as team standings, holding down fifth place with 30 points. MVAO leads the conference with 43 points.

Remsen-Union is 10th in the 11-team field with 11.5 points. Their leading golfer is Tyler Fiedler, currently in 35th place with 133.

Tonight, the boys golf at Odebolt-Arthur. As in each of the other four meets, the competition will be fierce and every stroke will count as the MVC champion is determined.
