It was a rough day for Le Mars Gehlen Catholic and Remsen-St. Mary's on Thursday afternoon as the teams teed off in the CYO golf tournament.

Bishop Garrigan took the team title with a score of 332, edging out Carroll Kuemper Catholic who finished with a 343. Gehlen tied St. Edwards (Fort Dodge) with a 363, just ahead of St. Mary's from Storm Lake who had a 371. Spalding Catholic finished with a 375 and Remsen-St. Mary's finished with a team score of 408.

The medalist on the afternoon was Colby Crisp from Bishop Garrigan and finished with a 77 at Alton Golf Course. Jeremy Rhodes had the lowest finishes for the Jays with his round of 90. Austin and Jordan Sitzmann were next, tying with a round of 93 over 18 holes.

"It was pretty nice out. The course is always tough and having only one score in the 70's shows you hard the course can be when it's a little breezy," said Gehlen's Cory Puetz.

Devin Christoffel rounded out the counted scores with a 95. Alex Pick finished with a 97 and Travis Sitzmann recorded a 98 on his scorecard.

"They did alright. After the first round scores, I thought (the scores) would have been better than they were," said Puetz. "I don't know if they got run down or what. The course was hilly so maybe that took something out of them."

The Hawks were led by Danny Begnoche's 96 and Louis Pick's 102. Brandon Loutsch had a 104 and Chris Harpenau rounded out the scoring for RSM with a 106.

"We had Louis (Pick) crack his driver so he was using his dad's and he wasn't used to that club and overall, the course played tough," said RSM's Mike Suppess. "I was very surprised to see the winning score was a 77, I was wowed when I saw that score. Overall, we didn't golf that well and unfortunately the ball didn't bounce our way."

Derek Gengler had a 109 and a Drew Theisen shot a 112 for the non-counters.

"I don't think we were very accurate off the tees and that hurt us," said Suppess. "We had our bad tee shots then we had to make a shot to try to recover from that and it got us into trouble."

The Jays will host West Sioux Friday afternoon before the War Eagle Conference dual next Tuesday at Akron. Remsen-St. Mary's will have a double-dual with A-W along with the WEC meet before sectionals at Hinton on Friday.

"I think we'll do alright," said Suppess. "At the very least, I want to improve on scores from today. I don't know if we'll be able to knock out Hinton or South O'Brien but I think we'll be able to knock out schools at our level like Spalding and maybe try to catch Gehlen."
