Christopher Velarde, 23, of Maurice, was charged by police with two felony counts of willful injury at about 2 a.m. Sunday after he allegedly stabbed two people: Joshua Thompson, 26, of Le Mars, and Melody Ropte, 30, of Le Mars.
Both received non-life-threatening stab wounds and knife cuts and were treated at the Floyd Valley Hospital. Police have filed no charges against Thompson or Ropte.
According to the police report, the fight took place outside of Dinger's Bar on Central Avenue Southwest. Officers responded to the incident at about 1:54 a.m.
"It was basically a bar fight," said Greg Smidt, senior officer with the Le Mars Police Department.
The police are still determining the motive for the fight.
Afterward, Velarde tried to run away from the scene of the crime on foot.
"Witnesses and patrons had actually chased him down," Smidt said.

Velarde remains in jail on a $10,000 bond.

this is so gay! We are not some high class town that people need to not be scared of what is coming but we are a town that is small and piecefull, but look at it now. Different people are wondering what they need in order to be safe....this town is suppose to be a small, safe town that people could depend on and not having to worry about sick people wondering the streets stabbing people.
To the people who don't like living in Le Mars because it is so full of cowards and racists--LEAVE. It's as simple as that. I have lived here my entire life and I have never felt the need to carry a knife. Has someone ever tried starting a fight with me in a bar before? Yes. Were they bigger than me? Yes. I am a mere 5 feet high. Did it ever occur to me that I should carry a knife with me, just in case? No.
Those of you talking about us "racist white people" here in Le Mars...do you not hear your own voices dripping with racism as you write such things???? If you are not racist yourselves, against white people, why is color even an issue??? The point of this story is that someone was stabbed. The point of most of the comments is that stabbing someone is wrong. Regardless of reason/motive. Personally, I don't care what race any of the involved parties are...and this story does not even mention what ethnicity any of these people are. Probably because it really doesn't matter. There were 3 people. One had a knife and stabbed someone. You stab someone, you are going to jail. He should have thought about that before he even left his house with a knife on him. You always have a choice as to how you are going to respond to someone else's actions. It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that stabbing someone is not the right choice.
Another great example of fantastic police work. I am proud.

since so many people know what really happened then obviously you know the second alleged stab victim Meoldy Ropte wasn't even stabbed or cut with a knife but actually was cut grabbing chris's watch hand where his watch band cut the back of her thumb she even tried to tell this to the LeMars PD the night of the stabbing but they didn't want to hear it, in fact her police report says all this and she also tried to have the Charges dropped against chris for her injury but thats how much the LeMars Pd does their work they really listen and look for the facts not the fantasy of what they want to have happened
I guess it's okay to try to talk down to someone with racist remarks and intimidate them cause their smaller then you and then try to jump them and when they finally lose it and knock out a bigger attacker after defending themselves then you cry about it's not fair and he should of walked away how is he going to walk away when your trying to jump him? and the stabbing resulted after he did walk away and the alleged victim chased him down with a bunch of his friends whatever that guy deserved it and so do alot more people who like jumping a 5'4 tall guy and saying they are apprending a knife wielding attacker your all cowards and spineless racist only in a town where the law enforcement is known for their inabiltity to perform their jobs and better known for their incompetence can such a thing happen LeMars Iowa where life is sweet if your white, ignorant, and like knowing your local law enforcement will turn a blind eye to your racially motivated attacks

WOW...ropeatruck--congrats on posting your ignorance on a public forum. First of all, stabbing someone, is never okay. The world is a harsh place and EVERYONE has been picked on or name called. You GET OVER IT, you don't stab someone. If you have to resort to using weapons because someone was mean to you, you've got mental problems. Get help. Second of all, the people stabbed are not police informants. I KNOW that to be a fact. So before you go posting your "facts" on a public forum, get them straight instead of making ignorant assumptions about people you obviously do not know.
Making racist remarks definately makes STABBING someone OK! If he was so offended by remarks made to him he could have easily left the bar but instead he chose to stab 2 people. It has nothing to do with anyone being a police informant.
The information reported here says nothing about the fact that SEVERAL people where making racist remarks and hiting Chris. He didn't take the first swing, one of the racists did but then he is a police informent and never gets in trouble
