HOWARD, S.D. -- Mary Ann Barrick 86, lifelong resident of Howard, S.D., died Thursday, March 20, 2008, at Indian Hills Nursing and Rehab Center in Sioux City after a brief illness.

The former Mary Ann Roth was born on her family's farm on Sept. 23, 1921. Her parents were Mary and Lewis Roth. Mary Ann attended school at Saint Agatha Catholic School, in Howard S.D. Mary Ann was a child of the Great Depression, and that definitely shaped her character. After her high school graduation she attended beauty school in Madison, S.D. She worked as a beautician for 43 years.

Mary Ann was married to Eugene Barrick on Aug. 10, 1948, at Saint Agatha Catholic Church in Howard. They built their own home and raised two daughters who were their pride and joy.

Mary Ann belonged to Saint Agatha parish her entire life. She belonged to church organizations, and was an active member the majority of her adult life.

Her interests included flowers and gardening; she had the ability to make anything grow. She also enjoyed other creative and artistic activities such as drawing, painting, quilting, sewing, needle work, crochet, clock making, and furniture restoration. She also loved animals, raising registered Pekinese dogs for many years. She especially loved her cats.

She is survived by one sister Monica Billings of Howard, S.D.; two daughters, Barbra Yunginger of Chandler Ariz., and Mari Ellsworth and her husband Greg, Sioux City; grandchildren: Michael Yunginger of Gillette, Wyo., Roberta Kelting and her husband Steve of Urbandale, Matthew Ellsworth of Minneapolis, Minn.

She was preceded in death by her husband Gene.

Funeral Mass will be held at at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Agatha's Catholic Church in Howard, with the Rev. Mike Schneider officiating. Burial will be at at St. Joseph's Cemetery of Howard. Luncheon following at the burial will be served at the Church hall.

A rosary service will be held at Willougby Funeral Homes of Howard on Sunday at 7 p.m.

Family and friends are invited to share this final chapter of Mary Ann's life. She has touched many lives over the years and is spending Easter in heaven this year!
