Jean Ann Hamersma was born Jan. 3, 1952, at Hawarden, the daughter of Albert and Evva (Schreur) Hamersma. She attended school in Hawarden and graduated from West Sioux High School in 1970. She attended nursing school at St. Luke's Hospital and later graduated as a registered nurse. Following graduation from nursing school, Jean began her 30-year career with St. Luke's Hospital as a nurse. She worked for many years caring for patients with mental health concerns and for the last few years before her retirement in 2004 she worked as a home health nurse for the hospital. She loved her career of caring for people.
Jean was a member of the New Horizons United Church of Christ in Akron. She enjoyed participating in church activities. She helped with Sunday School activities for several years. Jean loved to sing, especially hymns. Most recently, Jean was collecting birthday and anniversaries dates of the church family to begin a greeting card ministry with New Horizons United Church of Christ Church in Akron.
Survivors include her partner of 28 years, Steve Schierling of Akron; a son, Steve Schierling Jr. and his friend Jennifer White of Akron; two daughters, Brandy Orsini and her husband Keith of Sergeant Bluff and Wendy Schierling-Birdsell and her friend Jason Reimers of Hull; five grandchildren, Evan Mitchell, Taylor Schierling, Alex Birdsell, Nola Schierling, and Dennis Birdsell; a brother, Allen and his wife Barb Hamersma of Hawarden and there children: Todd Hamersma and his wife Tessa of Lincoln, Neb., Tim Hamersma and his wife Tammy of Battle Creek, Neb. and Brenna Hamersma and her friend Jeremy Barnhard of Sioux Falls, S.D.; her father-in-law, Richard "Red" Schierling of Akron; mother-in-law, Zona Voeks of California; a sister-in-law, Charlotte Morris of Riverside, Calif.; several cousins, and her church family at New Horizon's.
Jean was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Evva (Schreur) Hamersma.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home, Schroeder Chapel, in Akron, with the Rev. Steve Jewett of the New Horizons United Church of Christ officiating. Interment was in the Grace Hill Cemetery, Hawarden. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Akron with the family present to greet friends after 3 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. prayer service. Visitation continued Monday morning from 9:30 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.
Pallbearers will be Norm Mathison, Don Thompson, Tony John Schreur, Todd Hamersma, Tim Hamersma, and Stewart Schreur.
