The Le Mars Community wrestling team opened its season by placing fourth overall at the Wildcat Invitational Saturday in Humboldt.
Facing three open weight classes. The Bulldogs managed to climb the ranks with top-three finishes from Quinton Vore, Anthony Schimek, Zach Reed, Justin Carpenter, Spencer Vore and Andrew Prichard.
Le Mars scored 105 team points, trailing third-place Humboldt by just 7 1/2 points. Atlantic won the team title with 148.5, followed by runner-up Gladbrook-Reinbeck/North Tama with 116. Also competing at the meet were Shenendoah (87), Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto (86.5), Southeast Webster-Grand (62) and West Central Valley (42).
The Bulldogs crowned two champions on the day in Reed at 135 pounds and Prichard at 215.
Reed went unbeaten in three pool matches including a fall over Atlantic's Kody Havens, then scored a win over James Weida of G-R/NT in the first-place match.
Prichard received a first-round bye, then won by fall over Andrew Ferguson of Atlantic and Sam Hanson of MVAO to reach the finals. In the title bout, he defeated Peter Smith of Atlantic.
Le Mars' lone runner-up on the day was Carpenter at 171. Carpenter swept three pool matches to reach the finals before losing out to Shenendoah's Cord Willers by fall in 1:07.
Three wrestlers earned third-place finishes for the Bulldogs, starting with Quinton Vore at 119. Vore won his first match against Christian Heckman of Humboldt, then suffered his only loss of the day to Atlantic's Brad Schwenke. Vore bounced back by defeating Mike Iverson of G-R/NT and won the third-place match over Josh Subbert of West Central Valley.
Schimek earned a third-place finish at 130, receiving a bye and defeating Tanner Boyd of Humboldt before losing to Jake Schubert of Shenendoah. In the third-place match, Schimek defeated Cole Holten of MVAO.
Spencer Vore earned Le Mars' final third-place finish at 189, opening with a pin of Atlantic's Levi Schmitt. Vore then defeated Kevin Zimmermann of MVAO before falling to G-R/NT's Ian Wheeldon. Vore bounced back from that loss to defeat Spencer Lauman of Shenendoah.
The Bulldogs' other placewinners on the day included 5th-place finishes from Zach Reuter (140), Ben Beitelspacher (160) and Josh Munger (285), a 6th-place finish for Brayton Ringsdorf (152) and 7th-place finishes by Rene Van Whye (125) and Jared Meis (285).
