Gates open on 2007 Plymouth County Fair

Wednesday, July 25, 2007

"Welcome to the 2007 Plymouth County Fair!"

That's the greeting fair board president Tom Galles gave to guests at the Chamber "After 5" event Tuesday evening, kicking off activities at the fairgrounds.

New restrooms and expanded decks and ramps in the Pioneer Village were two of the projects highlighted by Galles.

The restrooms, located west of the Round Barn, includes women's and men's restrooms as well as a family restroom. Areas for two showers on each side are not completed, according to Galles.

"We are thankful to our contractors who put this up in 5 1/2 weeks," Galles said.

Again this year, the fairgrounds benefited from Eagle Scout projects. One project involved new doors on the Round Barn, while others continued the decks and handicap ramps project in Pioneer Village.

"The fair board did their usual shingling, painting and repairs as well," said Galles.

There will be action in the grandstand arena each night of this year's fair. Immediately following the crowning of the fair king and queen tonight (Wednesday), the White Horse Patrol will put on a show.

Thursday night, the Tuff Truck event moves to the evening, with the tractor pull and mini-rod pull in the arena Friday night.

Saturday is demolition derby night with Sunday night concluding with the mutton bustin', barrel racing and bull riding rodeo, followed by fireworks.

New attractions this year include the Monster Truck Rides and the NASCAR® simulator located by the grandstands.

"We also have the lumberjack show," said Galles.

"For the kids, we have Cady's Juggling & Mime Show. They will also conduct a learn-to-juggle workshop each evening," Galles said.

"The Pioneer Village stage will have a variety of music acts each evening," Galles noted.

Century Hall will be filled with activities as well, as the Family Living program is set for 7 p.m. Friday, the Life Skills Quilt Auction takes place Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m., Bill Riley Talent Shows Thursday and Sunday at 5:30 p.m., and the Old Fiddlers Jamboree Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m.

"We also have the carnival, something a lot of fairs don't have anymore," Galles said.

A moment of silence was observed for the late Merrill McNaughton, a fair volunteer who Galles said all remembered as "a great friend." The Service to Agriculture Award, normally given at the fair's Chamber event, was presented to McNaughton's sons in March during the Agri-Business Luncheon.

Members of the 2006 fair king and queen court gave their thanks for a great year representing the Plymouth County Fair, followed by the introduction of the 2007 king and queen candidates.
