Area school, city tax levies rise slightly

Friday, July 20, 2007

Even though Plymouth County's levy held steady from last year, most county landowners will see a small increase in their tax levies for 2007-08.

County Auditor Kae Meyer shared the levies for taxes payable in 2007-08 during the board of supervisors meeting on Tuesday.

Meyer said none of the increases were very dramatic.

Ag land in Struble will see one of the bigger increases in tax levies for Plymouth County this year, up about $2.40 per taxable thousand, while the levy for agricultural land in the Akron city limits will drop nearly $3 per mil. The Struble Ag levy is back up after dropping by nearly $3 last year.

With county levies nearly even -- dropping two-tenths of a cent -- and state levies down nearly a tenth of a cent, most the increases come in school and city levies.

The Lawton-Bronson school district, which just reaches into southern Plymouth County, is seeing a $2.4 per mil increase. Marcus Meriden Cleghorn schools are levying $1 more per taxable thousand, and Sioux City and West Sioux school districts are asking for increases of $.80 and $.70, respectively.

Some city levies are also seing a rise.

Le Mars' city levy will increase about $.80 per taxable thousand, Akron's will jump by $1.30 per mil, Kingsley by $2 per mil, Hinton by $1 per taxable thousand, Remsen and Sioux City by $.60 per mil and Craig by $.35 per mil.

Brunsville, Merrill, Oyens, Struble and Westfield's city levies stayed even or close to even from last year.
