While studying at Iowa, Venaas received a DAAD grant to study German and music in Freiburg, Germany, for a year. After receiving her undergraduate degrees at Iowa, she received her master's degree in oboe performance at the "Hanns Eisler" Conservatory of Music in Berlin, Germany, in 2006.
Venaas has performed with the Oskaloosa and Ottumwa symphonies in Iowa, as well as the Camerata Orchestra Freiburg, and the Chamber Orchestra Capella Berlin. While studying in Berlin, she was invited to take part in a 10-day orchestral project documentary celebrating the 60th anniversary of the end of World War II, which aired on national German television. She also performed as principal oboe for a conservatory orchestra master class under the direction of world-renowned conductor, Daniel Barenboim, at the Berlin Philharmonic in 2006.
Venaas has won several competitions, including the Kathryn Graham Concerto Competition and the Northern Festival of Bands Concerto Competition, and in 2003 she was awarded first prize at the Midwest Musical Imports double reed competition. Heidi is currently principal oboist of the Sioux City Symphony.
