ADRIAN, Mich. -- Sister Esther Sitzmann, formerly known as Sister Marie Jerome Sitzmann, died Friday, June 1, 2007, at Dominican Life Center in Adrian, Mich. She was 87 years of age and in the 69th year of her religious profession in the Adrian Dominican Congregation.

Sister Esther was born Sept. 20, 1919, in Kingsley, the daughter of George and Mary (Carel) Sitzmann. She graduated from St. Angela Academy in Carroll, and received a bachelor of arts degree in history from Siena Heights College (University) in Adrian, Mich., and a master of education degree from Loyola University in Chicago.

Sister Esther spent 33 years ministering in education in Detroit and Maybee, Mich.; Chicago, Joliet, Elgin and Oak Lawn, Ill., and Des Moines, Iowa. She served as secretary for Reliable Brokers, Michigan Gas Company, and the City of Detroit. From 1987 to 1988 she served as secretary for Southwest Adrian Chapter Office in Birmingham. Sister Esther retired in 1988 in Detroit and went to the Dominican Life Center in Adrian in August 1997.

Survivors include four sisters, Sister Rosalie Sitzmann O.S.B. of Watertown, S.D., Sister Faith Sitzmann O.S.B. of Yankton, S.D., Ruth Morrissey of Kingsley, and Marlys Koopman of Le Mars.

She was preceded in death by Sister Gertrude Sitzmann, also an Adrian Dominican sister; the Rev. Maion Sitzmann O.S.B., the Rev. Alphonse Sitzmann O.S.B., Sister Annette Sitzmann O.S.M. , Sister Mary Ambrose Sitzmann O.S.M., and Sister Marian Sitzmann O.S.M.

Visitation was June 4 at the Dominican Life Center followed by vigil prayer in St. Catherine Chapel. The funeral liturgy was offered in St. Catherine Chapel on Tuesday, June 5, with burial in the congregational cemetery.
