Tilley, his wife and five children came to Iowa in 1998 when he took early retirement from the Army. Now the Tilley family considers northwest Iowa their home.
"Our oldest child was turning 13, and we wanted to get back to Iowa and the Midwest values," says Tilley, "It's was one of the best decisions we've made."
After returning to Iowa, Tilley worked for the Department of Human Services as a social worker in O'Brien, Osceola and Clay counties. After more than three years with DHS, Tilley received a promotion and began working at the Cherokee Mental Health Institute where he was prompted to look into becoming a medical professional by his co-workers.
"I was encouraged by the doctors and other staff members to pursue a medical degree," notes Tilley.
Heeding his co-workers' advice, Tilley enrolled in the University of South Dakota Medical School in Vermillion. As graduation approached, he knew he either wanted to go back to working in the mental health field or go into family practice.
"Family practice gives a big area to work in while mental health is far more focused," says Tilley.
Tilley also knew the mental health field's required boards would be challenging in comparison to those required of family practice physicians. A good offer from Medical Associates sealed the deal for Tilley, who completed the Physicians Assistant Program at USD in December 2006 and signed on as a PA the same year.
Since adding Tilley to their physician roster, Medical Associates will now be offering additional open hours for patients. Starting June 5, Medical Associates will be open until 8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. During the weekday evening hours, Tilley will be the physician on duty.
"I'm here just to help and am always open to talking to our patients and getting feedback from them," says Tilley
Another asset Tilley brings to Medical Associates is his fluency in Spanish. During his junior high years, Tilley learned to speak the language while living in Puerto Rico with his grandparents.
"We're very excited to have him as part of our staff," says Julie Sitzmann of Medical Associates, "Especially with his Spanish speaking ability he's added another service for our patients that we really needed."
Since signing on with Medical Associates last year, Tilley has certainly found a home at Medical Associates and as a member of the Le Mars community.
"I enjoy working with people and getting to meet different people all the time," comments Tilley, "Everyday you come to work is just a good day, and Le Mars is an excellent place to work, with excellent people."
