GROTON, Conn. -- Doris D. Bates, 98, of Groton, Conn., died Wednesday, April 18, 2007, at Fairview Nursing, Groton, Conn.
Born Jan. 26, 1909, in Chatham, N.Y., she was the daughter of Charles M. and Minnie J. Miller Dunham.
She was baptized, confirmed, and married at Zion Lutheran Church, Pittsfield, Mass. She was a graduate of Pittsfield High School.
Mrs. Bates was a long-time member of the South Congregational Church, Pittsfield. She was a member of the P.E.O. Sisterhood Chapel Chapter L, the Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Massachusetts Society of Mayflower Descendants. She was a volunteer at the Berkshire County Museum and an avid bridge player.
She was employed by the Berkshire Life Insurance Company.
Her husband, Sherrill P. Bates, whom she married May 9, 1936, preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by two sisters, Ruth Nesbit and Cornelia Plouffe; grandson Joshua Bates; son-in-law Robert Wohlleber; and sister in-law and her husband, Marjorie and Willys Monroe.
Mrs. Bates leaves daughter and son-in-law Lois and Thomas Walnut, Syracuse, N.Y.; son and daughter-in-law Stephen and Phyllis Bates, Le Mars; daughter Ann Wohlleber, North Stonington, Conn.; grandchildren Elizabeth Muldrow, Canyon, Texas, Catherine Bates, Minneapolis, Minn.; Christopher Bates, West Des Moines, Ia.; John Wohlleber, Lakewood, Colo.; David Bates, Waverly, Ia.; Susan Lingard, Coventry, England; Mary Ridler, Jupiter, Fla.; Stephen Walnut, Swampscott, Mass.; 14 great-grandchildren; nephews and a niece.
Burial will be at a later date in the Pittsfield, Mass., Cemetery with arrangements by Wellington Funeral Home.
