Museum's 'Pioneer Potluck' series spotlights family heritage in county

Wednesday, March 21, 2007

The Plymouth County Historical Museum will continue its "Pioneer Potluck" series on families of Plymouth County sharing their pioneer heritage with a program this Sunday, March 25.

Families whose names begin with "M, N, O" will be in the spotlight during the 2 p.m. program Sunday in the Museum's Music Room, located on the main floor.

Those who have responded include Mammen, Masuen, Mauer, McDougall, Mohning, Molzen, Moran, Nicholson, Nilles and Oetken.

Any family who has been in Plymouth County since at least 1900 is invited to participate with a display of family heirlooms or photos, a brief story about the family and a favorite family dish.

The public is welcome to attend the "Pioneer Potluck" and taste the favorite family recipes.

The Northwest Iowa Genealogy Society is teaming up with the Museum to sponsor the two-year run of "Pioneer Potlucks."

In 2006, the two groups recognized 43 families who told their stories at the Museum.

Each family story will be saved in the files of the Northwest Iowa Genealogy Society for anyone wishing to do research.

Any families who would like to participate in the "M, N, O" program but had not signed up previously should contact the Museum immediately at 546-7002.

Wintry weather and the March blizzard necessitated moving the "M, N, O" Pioneer Potluck from its original February date to March 25. That in turn has rescheduled the program by families whose surnames begin with "P, Q and R" to be changed from its original March 25 date to the weekend of Sept. 22 and 23.

That weekend is also designated as a time for a "Celebrate the Hills" salute to the Loess Hills.

The focal point for the Loess Hills salute will be a new Loess Hills Wildlife exhibit, currently being completed by artist Lynn Jones of Le Mars.

A photography exhibit of the Loess Hills by Don Poggensee of Ida Grove will be among the features for the day. Loess Hills speakers also are planned. The Cherokee Ridge Runners will set up an encampment of an 1860s fur camp on the lawn of the Museum.

Tentative plans also call for a reunion of country school teachers.

The Community Foundation of Greater Plymouth County provided the grant monies for the Museum's "Celebrate the Hills" event Sept. 22 and 23.
