Frances O'Kane

Frances O'Kane, 84, of Le Mars and formerly of Hospers, died Sunday, Feb. 18, 2007, at Prime Living Apartments in Le Mars.

Frances O'Kane was born Jan. 14, 1923, at rural Hospers, the daughter of John and Cecelia (Jungers) Block. She was raised in the Hospers area and received her education at St. Anthony's Catholic School in Hospers.

On Jan. 23, 1945, she married Ray O'Kane at Hospers. They farmed in the Hospers area, retiring on the farm in 1986. Ray entered Plymouth Manor Care Center in Le Mars on July 9, 2001, and Frances moved to Le Mars to be near him on July 20, 2001. Ray died Sept. 6, 2001. In June 2005, Frances moved to Prime Living Apartments.

She was a current member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars and a past member of St. Anthony's Catholic Church and church guild in Hospers. For 35 years she was a teacher's aid at St. Anthony's Catholic School and later Spalding Catholic Elementary School.

The most important thing in her life was her family. She enjoyed gardening, jigsaw puzzles, crossword puzzles and playing cards.

Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Mary and Tom Budden of Granville and Donna and Mike Shea of Le Mars; two sons, Jim and his wife, Sue of Urbandale, and Dave of Bellevue, Neb.; one daughter-in-law, Meme O'Kane of Battle Lake, Minn.; 10 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one brother and his wife, Oscar and Bernice Block of Remsen; one brother-in-law, John and his wife, Dolly O'Kane of New Ulm, Minn.; and one sister-in-law, Lucille O'Kane of Omaha, Neb.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dennis; one brother, Ambrose Block and his wife, Bernice; two brothers-in-law, Bob O'Kane and his wife, Lois, and Dick O'Kane.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Hospers with the Revs. John Vakulskas, Patrick O'Kane, James Tigges and Richard D. Ball officiating. Burial will be in St. Anthony Cemetery in Hospers.

Friends may call any time after 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Anthony Catholic Church. There will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the church.

The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
