Lucille Thiel, 92, of Remsen, died Friday, Dec. 1, 2006, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen. Lucille Thiel was born July 18, 1914, at rural Marcus, the daughter of Timothy and Mary (Athem) Tracey.
Lucille was raised in the Marcus area. She attended country school for eight years and then went to Holy Name Catholic High School in Marcus from which she graduated in 1932. Upon graduation she worked for her parents and baby sat for neighbors as needed. On June 27, 1933, she married John "Jack" Thiel at Marcus. They made their home in Remsen. She assisted her husband in the operation of their business, Jack Thiel, Inc., in Remsen and was the bookkeeper for more than 40 years. Jack died August 14, 1980.
She had been a resident of the Happy Siesta since Oct. 24, 1996.
She was a member of Mary's Catholic Church, church Guild, Catholic Daughters of America, all in Remsen.
She was an excellent seamstress and was noted for her overnight biscuits. She was "Mom" to all the young girls at the nursing home and was a special friend to all the residents of the home.
Survivors include five sons, John E. Jr. "Buck", Bernard J. "Shorty", Marion, Robert "Bob" and his wife Mary Kay, all of Remsen, Daniel "Butch" of LeMars; seven grandsons, Bob and his wife Karen, Mike and his wife Monica, Brad and his wife Sara, Chris and his wife Jenny, Matt and his wife Kim, Mitch, Andy and his wife Megan; two stepgranddaughters, Marlene Klein and Barb Pick; three great-granddaughters; two great-grandsons; several great-stepgrandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by two daughters-in-law, Ruth Thiel and Florence Thiel; two brothers, Mike and Bernard Tracey; and one sister, Alice Pitts.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Revs. William McCarthy and Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There was a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and the Catholic Daughters of America and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.
Casketbearers were Bob, Mike, Brad, Chris, Matt, Mitch and Andy Thiel.
