Helen M. Groetken, 93 ?, of Le Mars, died Friday Nov. 17, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars, following a brief illness.
The former Helen Margaret Plendl was born April 28, 1913, at Armour, S.D., the daughter of George A. and Agnes (Connor) Plendl. While she was still a young girl her family moved to a farm south of Le Mars near Neptune. Helen married Ray Groetken on September 14, 1937 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church-Neptune, rural Hinton. The couple farmed for many years near Le Mars in America Township. In 1986 they retired and moved into Le Mars. Her husband Ray passed away on April 28, 1996.
Helen was a member of St. James Catholic Church and a longtime member of the Christian Mothers Society.
Survivors include two sons and their wives, Rick and Helga Groetken of Le Mars and Jeff and Patti Groetken of Sioux City; three daughters and their husbands, Judy and Bud Kurth of Estherville, Eloise and Lenny Stinton of Omaha and Sally and Darwin Smith of Le Mars; 10 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Dorothy Tentinger of Le Mars; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ray Groetken; a grandson, Patrick Kurth; three brothers, Leonard, Vince and Steve; and three sisters, Rita Dunn, Collette Groetken and Rose Ann Majeres.
A Mass of Christian Burial was at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges presiding. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars.
Visitation was after 3 p.m. Sunday at the Feuerstein Funeral Home in Le Mars. A combined rosary by the parish and Christian Mothers was at 4 p.m. and the Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Her 10 grandchildren were pallbearers: Gary Kurth, Tracy Kurth, Mike Groetken, Kris Groetken, Kara Groetken, Lisa Tedesco, Robin Clark, Kelli Smith, Tony Miranda and Kim Munday.
