Verna Harvey

Verna Harvey, 83, of Remsen, died Sunday, Oct. 29, 2006, at her home in Remsen after a brief illness.

Verna Harvey was born Dec. 11, 1922, at Ashton, the daughter of Dominic and Catherine (Kolbeck) Weiler. She lived near Ashton where she received her education in the rural school system. In 1931, at the age of 9, she moved with her family to rural Remsen and attended St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen.

On Oct. 30, 1942 she married Floyd Harvey at the Army chapel in Camp Crowder, Mo., where Floyd was serving a tour of duty while in the Army. After his discharge they returned to the Remsen area where they were engaged in farming southeast of town. Floyd died April 4, 1967.

Verna continued to farm with the help of family and friends until 1971 and also pursued her education, obtaining her GED and then attended Western Iowa Tech in Sioux City where she graduated with a degree in practical nursing on Aug. 4, 1972. She worked at St. Luke's Medical Center in Sioux City for 13 years and always said that she loved her job and loved being a nurse. Over the years she also worked at Anchor Inn in Kingsley, Pick's Corner, Connors Lounge and Ruth's Café, all in Remsen.

She was an avid reader, bowler and golfer and loved to travel and watch baseball. She bowled in league for almost 50 years and in national tournaments for 20 years. She had traveled to all 50 states and many foreign countries

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and church Guild in Remsen.

Survivors include three sons, Keith and his wife Norine of Remsen, David of Humboldt, S.D., and Roger and his wife Maureen of Council Bluffs; three daughters, Joyce and her husband Darwin Draayer of Remsen, Karen Anderson of Le Mars and Lauri Dickman of Kingsley; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Valeria Schroeder of Remsen and Rosella Mueller of Omaha, Neb.; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Terry Weiler and Octavia Weiler, both of Remsen, Mary Bock of Belmond, Evelyn Bierman of Tempe, Ariz., Carel Connor of Remsen, Dean and his wife Sharon Harvey of Marcus.

She was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Gilbert and Marvin Weiler, one sister, Donna Connor; her father and mother-in-law, Frank and Minnie Harvey; brothers and sisters-in-law, Ralph Mueller, Dominic Schroeder, Ray and his wife Avada (Harvey) Mills, Harold Bock and Merlin Bierman.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Revs. William McCarthy and Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen.

Friends may call after 2 p.m. Thursday, at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. by St. Mary's Guild and a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. all at the funeral home.

Casketbearers will be Chris Anderson, Heather Dickman, John Galles, Erin, Jason and Terry Harvey.
