Kendall O. Mortenson, 71, of Benson, Minn., died Saturday morning, Oct. 7, 2006, at Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar, Minn.
Kendall O. Mortenson was born July 2, 1935, in Benson, Minn., the son of Oliver and Vera (Thompson) Mortenson. Kendall was baptized at Our Saviors Church in Benson and confirmed at Buffalo Lake Lutheran Church in rural De Graff, Minn. He grew up in Cashel Township and attended country school through the eighth grade. He graduated from Benson High School with the class of 1953. After high school, he went on to attend Concordia College in Moorhead, Minn.
On Feb. 7, 1956, Kendall was united in marriage to Gloria Long in Seattle, Wash. This union was blessed with four children. Together, Kendall and Gloria were able to share in 50 years of marriage.
Kendall worked for Boeing Aircraft in Seattle, Wash., for a short time before moving back to the farm. He farmed until 1985, while also working construction, eventually forming his own construction company, Sturdy Construction, which he continued until 1993. He worked at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church as a custodian, and most recently, he had been working at Redball in Benson.
Kendall was a member of Our Redeemers Lutheran Church, and served as an usher and the cemetery sextant. He was a member of the Farmer's Union, the Putts and Purrs Tractor Club, the Cashel Township Board, and the School Board District #2210. Among the things he enjoyed were gardening, antique tractors, reading, puzzles, fishing, boats, and especially spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Kendall is survived by his wife Gloria of Benson; his sons, Steven (and Laurie) Mortenson of Benson, Minn., Jonathan (and Gayla Wielenga) Mortenson of Le Mars, Dale (and Pamela Kleidon) Mortenson of Spicer, Minn.; daughter, Susan (and David) Anfinson of Willmar, Minn.; grandchildren: Matthew (and Natasha) Mortenson of Morris, Minn., Stephanie (and Chad) Jewel of Des Moines, Eric Mortenson of Fresno, Calif., Molly (and Jesse) Lippert of Spicer, Minn., Peter Mortenson of Spicer, Minn., Daniel Anfinson and Rebecca Anfinson of Willmar, Minn.; two great-grandchildren, Grace and Cowan Mortenson; two sisters, Darlene Anderson of Portland, Ore., and Arlys Isaacson of Redmond, Wash.; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Oliver and Vera; and an infant sister.
Funeral services will be 2 p.m. today (Thursday) at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson, Minn., with the Rev. Steven Knudson officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Visitation was from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Our Redeemers Lutheran Church in Benson. Visitation continued at the church for one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are with the Zniewski Funeral Home in Benson.
