Irene Schlichte. 99, of Alton, died Sunday, Aug. 13, 2006, at the Heritage House Nursing Home Orange City.
The former Irene Kreber was born May 2, 1907, at Granville, the daughter of August and Clara (Gukeisen) Kreber, Irene was raised and educated in the Granville area. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School in Granville. Irene married Edward Schlichte on Feb. 6, 1928, at Granville. They farmed in the Granville and Alton area. The couple then sold their farm and moved into Alton in 1964. Ed diedNov. 29, 1989. Irene continued to live in Alton until April 2002 when she moved into Heritage House Nursing Home in Orange City.
She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, church Guild & Rosary Society, all in Alton.
Irene loved to crochet, quilt, make afghans and doilies. She also loved to play bridge and pinochle.
Survivors include two sisters, Viola Nelson of Cherokee, and Eleanore Britton of Laguna Beach, Calif.; three brothers, Clarence Kreber and Francis Kreber, both of Granville and Arnold and his wife, Lorraine Kreber of Alton; and several nieces and nephews.
She was peceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Evelyn and her husband Hank Klein, Helen and her husband Urban Holles and Mary Jane and Richard Meis; a brother-in-law, Elmer V. Nelson and two sisters-in-law, Hilda and Janet Kreber.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton with the Rev. John Vakulskas Jr. officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Alton. Friends may call any time after 2 p.m. today (Monday). There will be a rosary at 3 p.m. a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., all at the St. Mary's Catholic Church in Alton. The Fisch Funeral Home of Remsen is in charge of arrangements.
