Hilda L. Renken, 90, of Le Mars, died Friday, Aug. 4, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Hilda Louise Popken was born Aug. 9, 1915, on the family farm in Grant Township, rural Le Mars, the daughter of Adolph and Clara (Kruse) Popken. She was baptized and confirmed at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Preston Township. Hilda attended Grant #4 through the eighth grade. As a young girl Hilda worked on the family farm.
She was united in marriage to William R. Renken Sr. on Nov. 25, 1933, at Christ Lutheran Church Parsonage in Grant Township. Hilda and William lived with his parents briefly before moving to a farm in Washington Township where they farmed for many years. In 1969 Hilda and William moved to Le Mars. William died in February 1978.
Hilda continued to live in her home until June 11, 2004, when she moved to the Brentwood Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars. While living at Brentwood, Hilda enjoyed helping with laundry and in the kitchen. She also enjoyed participating in the many activities of the care center, especially the Red Hat Society.
Hilda was a longtime member of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville where she had been a Sunday School teacher, a member of the W.E.L.C.A., serving food at the "food shack" at the ball field in Brunsville and helped serve numerous church lunches. She enjoyed playing cards and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her four children: William R. Renken and his wife Janice, Rodney R. Renken and his wife Sarah and Marlyn W. and his wife Mary ,all of rural Le Mars, and Nancy Vande Zandschulp and her husband, Marvin of Sioux Center; 13 grandchildren: Debra and her husband John Ahlers of Le Mars, Denise and her husband Neal Anthony of Le Mars, Jacqueline and her husband Bill Rieken of Le Mars, Christine and her husband Tom Sims of Sioux Falls, S.D., Steven and his wife Shannon Renken of Le Mars, Sandra Renken of Le Mars, Patrick Renken of Le Mars, Suzanne and her husband Jeff Tournillion of Chicago, Ill., Ryan Renken of Le Mars, Nikki Renken of Le Mars, Ellen and her husband Luke Pedersen of Sioux Center, Gwendolyn Vande Zandschulp of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Lora Vande Zandschulp of Sioux Center; 17 great-grandchildren; three stepgreat-grandchildren; a sister, Helen Popken of Le Mars; two sisters-in-law, Edith Renken of Le Mars and Everdena Renken of Irene, S.D.; and several in-laws and nieces and nephews.
Hilda was preceded in death by her parents, Adolph and Clara (Kruse) Popken; her husband William R. Renken, Sr.; a daughter, Ellen Marie in infancy; twin grandsons, Kevin and Keith Renken; seven sisters: Dora Westhoff, Clara Oetken, Emma Westhoff, Alma Onken, Della Dirks, Amanda Haage, and Tina Popken in infancy; and a brother, Albert Popken.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Brunsville, with the Rev. Daniel Gerrietts officiating. Burial was in Christ Lutheran Cemetery, Grant Township, rural Le Mars. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars with the family present to greet friends after 4 p.m. followed by a 5 p.m. prayer service. Visitation continued Monday morning at St. Peter Lutheran Church from 9:30 a.m. until service time.
Pallbearers were Neal Anthony, John Ahlers, Patrick Renken, Ryan Renken, Steven Renken, Luke Pedersen, Jeff Tournillon, and Brenden Anthony. Honorary pallbearers were Darwin Dirks, Earl Oetken, Varold Voss, Ardis Johnson, Harold Jelken, Wayne Brown, Warren Oetken, Bill Rieken, Tom Sims and all of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
