Harold L. Baldes, a Le Mars native and lifelong resident, died Sunday July 30, 2006, at Plymouth Manor in Le Mars, at the age of 89.
Harold Lawrence Baldes was born March 29, 1917, on a farm in Stanton Township south of Le Mars, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth (Vondra) Baldes. He grew up south of Le Mars and attended country school in Stanton Township. Harold farmed south of Le Mars until 1956, at which time he moved into Le Mars. He was engaged in a variety of self-employed jobs over the years.
Harold married Mary Riebe and they continued to live in Le Mars their entire married lives.
Harold was a longtime member of St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars.
He enjoyed playing the accordion and for several years had played for residents at some of the area nursing homes.
Survivors include his wife Mary; a daughter, Lois Mentzer and her husband, Jim of Le Mars; a son, Allan Baldes and his wife, Carol of Iowa City; four grandchildren: Mike Mentzer of Omaha, Neb., Jill De Marco and her husband, Christopher of Milwaukee, Wis., David Baldes and his wife, Tammy of Farmington, Minn., and Brad Baldes and his wife, Janice of Coralville; six great-grandchildren; and a sister, Elizabeth Britt Parry of Le Mars.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister Leona Dreckman; and a brother-in-law, Aloysius Britt.
A Memorial Mass will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. James Catholic Church in Le Mars, with the Rev. James Tigges officiating. A private family burial will be in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery - Neptune in Lincoln Township before the Mass.
Visitation at the Feuerstein Funeral Home will be anytime after 2 p.m. today (Tuesday) where there will be a parish rosary at 4 p.m. and the Scriptural wake service at 7 p.m.
Pallbearers will be Mike Mentzer, David Baldes, Brad Baldes, and Christopher De Marco.
