Charles "Chuck" Neubrand, 58, of Clearwater, Fla., and a former Le Mars resident, died April 24, 2006, at his residence, following a brief battle with cancer.
Chuck was born Dec. 26, 1947, in Le Mars, the son of William and Madeline Neubrand, and attended Gehlen Grade and High School, graduating in 1965. He was active in all sports and held a track record until it was broken by his nephew, Rob Neubrand many years later. He graduated from Westmar College in 1969 and two weeks later, on Labor Day, was involved in a tragic automobile accident that left him paralyzed from the chest down. After a lengthy hospital stay in Sioux City and extensive rehab in Iowa City and Des Moines, Chuck went to Boca Raton, Fla., for a visit that turned into making his residence in Florida for the remainder of his life.
He enrolled at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton and earned his master's degree in guidance and counseling. He also met his future wife, Sandy Skinner, and they were married July 7, 1973.
Shortly, thereafter, they moved to Clearwater due to Chuck's employment with the CETA Corporation and two years later, Chuck was hired by the IBM Corporation in Tampa. He retired from IBM as a systems engineer after 25 years of employment.
He was an avid sports fan and held season tickets to the Tampa Bay Bucs for many years.
His uncanny sense of humor, quick wit, and zest for life has been an inspiration to all who knew him.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 33 years, Sandy; son, Brian M. of Clearwater, Fla.; son, Drew W. (Angel) of Riverview, Fla.; his mother, Madeline Neubrand and three brothers, Bill Jr., Don (MaryLee), and Denny, all of Le Mars; a sister, Ann (Darrell) Muir of Palm Coast, Fla.; a sister-in-law, Cindy (Fred) Martinson of Kendall, Fla.; and many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, grand-nephews, aunts and uncles, and cousins.
Chuck was preceded in death by his Father, Wm. J. Neubrand, of Le Mars, in 1979.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Le Mars at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, June 20.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family of Chuck Neubrand would prefer a memorial contribution be made to the Christopher Reeve Foundation (a spinal cord injury research organization).
