Dennis J. Mertes, 57, of Kansas City, Mo., and formerly of Le Mars, died suddenly Monday, May 29, 2006, at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines while visiting family and friends.

Dennis James Mertes was born June 10, 1948, in Merrill, the son of James V. and Mae D. (Harms) Mertes. He was baptized and confirmed into the Christian faith. He attended school in Le Mars, and graduated from Le Mars Community High School. He attended Westmar College in Le Mars, and graduated in 1971. Dennis managed a bakery in Madison, S.D., for a few years. He returned to Le Mars and had managed the Job Service office in Le Mars for several years and later worked as the financial aide officer at Westmar College.

He had also owned the H & R Block office in Le Mars for a few years. Dennis had achieved the status of an enrolled agent; which allowed him to practice before the I.R.S. For the last several years, Dennis worked for the United States Department of Education in the Kansas City office as a auditor supervisor. He was currently employed with the United States Department of Education in Kansas City as a supervisory auditor.

Dennis enjoyed gardening, traveling, writing, and spending time with his family, friends, and his two cats, Grace and Kelly. He volunteered with the Kansas City Zoo, having recently been involved with the creation of the new big cat exhibit. He also enjoyed biking and enjoyed going on several RAGBRAI trips. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

He was a former member of the Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill and currently attended St. Theresa Catholic Church in Kansas City.

Survivors include his two children, Amy Jean Mertes of Merrill, and Nicholas Mertes of Virginia Beach, Va.; two grandchildren, Jade Mae and Evan Allan; four brothers, Thomas Mertes of Le Mars and James Mertes and his wife Tomoko of Le Mars, Charles Mertes and his wife Kristen Borg of Des Moines, and Jeff Mertes and his wife, Helen of Des Moines; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James V. and Mae D. (Harms) Mertes.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of the Assumption Catholic Church in Merrill, with the Rev. Daniel Greving officiating. Interment will be in Calvary Cemetery in Le Mars. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today (Thursday) at the Carlsen Funeral Home in Le Mars. There will be a 6:30 p.m. parish rosary at the funeral home Thursday evening. Visitation will resume Friday morning at the church in Merrill from 9:30 a.m. until service time.

Casketbearers will be Ken Mertes, Ken Engel, Jim Flaherty, Jim Utesch, Phillip McBride, and Justin Harms. Honorary casketbearers will be Doug Mertes, Mark Mertes, Gary Breitbarth, and Faron Harms.
