LeRoy "Blackie" Schroeder, 83, of Remsen, died Wednesday, May 10, 2006, at Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen
LeRoy Schroeder was born Feb. 12, 1923, at rural Remsen, the son of John and Mary (Loutsch) Schroeder. LeRoy was raised in the Remsen area and received his education in both the rural school system and St. Mary's Catholic School from which he graduated in 1940. He was then engaged in farming with his father.
On Nov. 19, 1947 he married Maureen Hays at Larchwood. They made their home south of Remsen where they were engaged in farming. In 1978 they retired and moved into Remsen.
LeRoy was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen and was a church decorator for more than 20 years and church usher for many years. He was instrumental in the restoration of St. Mary's Grotto in 1985 and in its maintenance from then until 2005. He was a member of the 4th Degree Knights of Columbus Garrigan Assembly and helped manage the K.C. lunch stand at the annual Remsen Kids Days for many years. He was a member of the past Luxembourg Brotherhood and served on the care review board for Happy Siesta Health Care Center for many years.
He enjoyed playing cards, golfing and fishing and in his younger years he played on the Remsen town baseball team. After retiring, he worked part time for the Fisch Funeral Home and the past Moeller Funeral Home, both in Remsen.
Survivors include his wife, Maureen of Remsen; one son, Donald of Sioux Falls, S.D., and his fiancée Mary White of Hartford, S.D.; three daughters and their husbands, Bonnie and Nate Jones of Cary, N.C., Helen and Bill Bailey of Woodbury, Minn., and Patti and John Brodell of Davenport; 12 grandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; three great-stepgrandchildren; one sister and her husband, Jeanette and Clarence Ricke of Remsen; five sisters-in-law, Florence Schroeder of Le Mars, Florence Schroeder, Joan Schroeder and Valeria Schroeder, all of Remsen, Louise Beck of Sacramento, Calif.; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, Clarence, Ray and his wife Virginia, Elmer and his wife Hildegarde, Dominic and Vernon; one sister, Helen and her husband Alfred Keffeler.
Funeral services will be at 10;30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating and Msgr. Nicholas J. Ruba concelebrating. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery in Remsen.
Friends may call anytime after 2 p.m. Sunday at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen. There will be a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m. and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Knights of Columbus followed by a 4th Degree Knights of Columbus honor guard and chalice service, all at the funeral home.
Casketbearers will be Shiuvaun Reuter, Theresa Conlin, Jacob and Abram Lukowicz, Benjamin and Nathaniel Scharff, Bryanna "Rosie" and Katie Brodell.
Knights of Columbus honorary bearers will be Carel Connor, Edward Henrich, Walter Nilles, Vernon Staab, Alfred Wilberding, George Wittkop.
