Helen Adel Elving, 92, of Le Mars, formerly of the Alcester, S.D., area, died Friday, May 5, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Village (Brentwood) in Le Mars.
Helen Adel Elving was born July 9, 1913, in Hawarden, the daughter of John and Mabel (Honeywell) Hodgson. She attended West Sioux High School in Hawarden. Following high school, she moved to Hot Springs, S.D., where she worked in the dining room at the veterans home.
In 1931, Helen married Marion Biesbrock in Hawarden. They lived on a farm near Hawarden and where their daughter Mabel was born. Helen was employed in home health care after Marion died in 1936. Helen later married Harvey Finch in 1939 in Hawarden. They made their home on a farm near Beresford, S.D. To this union was born a daughter Barbara and son John. Harvey died in a farm accident in 1942.
On Jan. 6, 1945, Helen and Oscar Elving were united in marriage at Alcester, S.D., where they made their home. To this union was born two sons, Leonard and Bruce. Helen worked at Otis Radio in Hawarden and was the head housekeeper at Morningside Manor. She and Oscar were also the custodians of the Alcester Baptist Church. Oscar died in August 1971.
Helen moved to Le Mars in 1979 to spend her retirement years. She was currently a resident at the Good Samaritan Village in Le Mars.
Helen was a member of the Alcester Baptist Church and attended the First Baptist Church while living in Le Mars. She enjoyed family reunions, picnics and hosting dinners for friends and family.
Survivors include her children, a daughter Mabel Meister and her husband, Arnold of Le Mars, a daughter Barbara Madsen and her husband, Larry of Anthon, a son Leonard Elving and his wife, Judy of Sioux Falls, S.D., and a son Bruce Elving of Sioux Falls, S.D.; 11 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; six great-great grandchildren; seven step-grandchildren, seven step-great-grandchildren; and one step great-great-grandchild; and a brother Glen Hodgson and his wife Idel of Las Vegas, Nev.
She was preceded in death by her parents John and Mabel; husbands Marion Biesbrock, Harvey Finch and Oscar Elving; a son John in 1973; a grandson Clair; a great-grandson Jashua Clark; a great-great-granddaughter Allie; and a step-great-great-grandson Tyler; four sisters, Blanche Roberts, Dorothy Hodgson, Inez Skatrude and Maybelle Snyder; and three brothers, Ray, Guy and Roger Elving.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Alcester Baptist Church in Alcester, S.D., with the Rev. Dallas Johnson officiating. Burial will follow at Big Springs, S.D. Visitation will begin at 2 p.m. today (Monday) at the First Baptist Church, 621 Remer Drive, in Le Mars. The family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m. with a prayer service at 7 p.m. with the Rev. Jon Meredith officiating. There will also be one hour of visitation at the church prior to the funeral.
