Street crossing safety issues near the Little League field got an airing again as John Britton, president, Le Mars Little League appeared before the Le Mars City Council at their April 18 meeting.
Britton, citing the efforts of Little League coaches and volunteers and of those working with youth soccer to stress safety with young players, called on the Council for assistance in resolving the on-going street crossing dangers on Ninth Avenue Southwest.
Noting that the adult pedestrians are also a concern, Britton said Little League has done all possible to instill safety measures with the young players adding that he and City Administrator Scott Langel have also discussed the problem.
Several possible options, among the temporarily closing the street, additional temporary stop signs and installation of a chain-link fence open at the crosswalk with installation of speed bumps, were discussed. The fence/speed bump recommendation appeared to receive considerable Council support.
The Council has asked Britton to meet with Langel and members of the Traffic Committee to formalize a feasible solution to be brought back to the Council for future action.
