Gehlen golf takes two from Unity Christian

Gehlen Catholic's boys and girls golf teams remained in the War Eagle Conference title hunt Thursday with wins over Unity Christian at Landsmeer Golf Club in Orange City.

The Jays improved to 4-1 in the WEC with a narrow 177-178 win over the host Knights as Brian Weishaar shot a low round of 42 to earn medalist honors for the first time this season. Gehlen also had counting scores from Scott Campbell (44), Alex Pick (44) and Michael Wendt (47), with Alex Sitzmann (48) and Alex Langel (49) carding non-counting rounds.

Unity was led by runner-up medalist Austin Schuiteman with a 43, while Brady Goslinga (44), Ben Christians (45) and Derek Dreise (46) also shot counting rounds. Non-counters for the Knights included Caleb DeGroot (47) and David DeWit (48).

The Knights' JV squad shot one stroke better than the varsity and that was more than enough to take a 177-197 win from Gehlen. Jake DeGroot (42), Eric Post (44), Craig Groeneweg (45) and Brice Kroeze (46) contributed counting scores for Unity, with Tyler Jacobsma (51) and Blake Kruger (57) shooting non-counting rounds.

The Jays were led on JV by Eric Hoffman with a 46, while Tyler Sitzmann (49), Austin Sitzmann (50) and Tim Rosener (52) all had counting rounds. Non-counting rounds came from Devin Christoffel and Shahryar Naqvi with 56s.

The Lady Jays improved to 3-1 at the varsity level with a 212-268 win over host Unity, led by meet medalist Erin Hatting with a 49. Teammate Tiffany Sitzmann was runner-up medalist with a 52, while Katie Freking (53) and Shayla Sitzmann (58) also shot counting scores. Lisa DeRocher (59) and Sarah Wells (67) were non-counters.

Unity had counting scores from Dorinda Hibma (57), Michaela VanKlompenburg (68), Shawna Lourens (71) and Jill Rietema (72), with non-counting scores from Jana Van Bruggen (76) and Ellie Ruter (77).

The Gehlen girls were also winners on the JV level, 228-259. Alice Traufler (51), Cayla Price (54), Jackie Kessenich (61) and Amanda Cronin (62) tallied counting scores in the win, with Emily Tentinger (67) and Vicky Vaske (76) as non-counters.

Unity had counting scores from Lora Vermeer (58), Beck Nibbelink (66), Abbie Dorhout (67) and Anna Schiebout (68). Non-counters were Amanda Boer (72) and Crystal Addink (81).
