MARCUS -- Claude H. Bortscheller, 90, of Marcus, died Monday, April 3, 2006, at Heartland Care Center in Marcus,.
Claude was born July 15, 1915, in Le Mars, the son of Frank and Rosalia (Heissel) Bortscheller. He grew up in Oyens area, graduating from St. Catherine's in Oyens. On Sept. 2, 1940, he married Irene E. Rupp at the Immaculate Conception Church in Cherokee. After their marriage they lived and farmed in the Oyens area until moving to the Marcus area upon their retirement in 1981.
He was a member of the Holy Name Catholic Church and a 50-year member of the Knights of Columbus from Remsen Council.
Survivors include his wife, Irene of Marcus; four sons, Doug and his wife, Sharon of Burnsville, Minn., Tom and his wife, Kathy of Granville, Philip and his wife, Judith of Shorewood, Minn., and Mike Bortscheller and his wife, Deb of Sioux Falls, S.D.; five daughters, Winnie Vourvoulias and her husband, George of Green Lake, Wis., Ann Guntzel and her husband, Tim of Golden Valley, Minn., Nora Beelner and her husband, Pat of Boulder, Colo., Joan Harte and her husband, Buck of Brandon, S.D., and Lisa Tibbetts and her husband, Ed of Davenport; 28 grandchildren, and 17 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; five brothers, John, Mike, Joseph, Ed and Charles Bortscheller and four sisters, Malitta and Sylvia Bortscheller, Mary Wilberding and Marcella Kleiman.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. Burial will be at Holy Name Cemetery. Visitation begins after 2 p.m. Wednesday, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m. and a Scripture service at 7 p.m. all at the Holy Name Catholic Church.
