Donna Hoefling

Donna Hoefling, 67, of rural Marcus, died Sunday, March 19, 2006 at her home.

Donna Louise Buddenhagen was born March 27, 1938, at Alta, the daughter of Edward and Rosa (Roggow) Buddenhagen. She graduated from Brooke Consolidated High School in Peterson, and later attended Iowa Wesleyan College in Mt. Pleasant.

On Aug. 15, 1956, Donna and James Dean Hoefling were united in marriage at Elk Point, S.D. The couple made their home in California where Donna worked for Lockheed Aircraft. In 1957, they moved to a farm north of Marcus. Donna worked as a bookkeeper and secretary at the Marcus Veterinary Clinic for more than 30 years. In years past she also worked part-time for the Marcus News.

Donna was an active member of Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus and a member of the Holy Name Choir. She participated in Catholic Daughters of the Americas and St. Ann's Guild having held various offices in each organization.

Donna also belonged to the Marcus Golf Club Ladies' League, Marcus Bowling League, Hobby Club, Bridge Club, Birthday Club and had been a Jayceette.

She took an interest in politics, flower and vegetable gardening, her dog and cat, and visiting with friends. However, most important in Donna's life was her family. Donna gave the gift of sight through the Iowa Lions Tissue Donation Program.

Survivors include her husband Jim of Marcus; a daughter Laurie Hoefling of Davenport, daughter Lynn Mohning and her husband Loren of Marcus, son Alan and his wife Geralyn of Marcus, son Gary and his wife Julie of Spencer, son Bob and his wife Lori of Marcus, and son Ken and his wife Holly of Shanghai, China; 24 grandchildren: Ben (Patty) Mohning of Vermillion, S.D., Joe (fiance Kristine) Mohning of Vermillion, S.D., Patrick, Katie and Beth Mohning of Marcus, Allison, Alexandrea, Amanda, Andrew and Angeleah Hoefling of Marcus, Pvt. Kory Hoefling with Delta Co. of Camp Hovey, South Korea, Kari Hoefling of Iowa City, Kevan Hoefling of Jackson, Tenn., Nicolas Hoefling of Spencer, Kristina and Amber Mortenson of Spencer, Johnathon and Heather Hoefling of Marcus, Samantha, Michael, Matthew, Mitchell, Marshall and Grace Hoefling of Shanghai, China; three brothers, Ronald Buddenhagen of Cranbrook, BC, Canada, Jim (Ruth) Buddenhagen of Humboldt and David (Chris) Buddenhagen of Springfield, Neb.; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a son John, and a brother Ray.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Holy Name Catholic Church in Marcus. The Rev. Eugene Murray will officiate. Burial will follow at Holy Name Catholic Cemetery in Marcus. Visitation will begin at 4 p.m. today (Wednesday) at the Holy Name Catholic Church. The family will be present from 5-8 p.m. with a vigil service at 7 p.m. Visitation will resume at 9 a.m. Thursday at the church and will continue until Mass. The Earnest-Rohde Funeral Home of Marcus is in charge of arrangements.
