Elmer B. Klein Jr., 64, of Remsen, died unexpectedly Thursday, Feb. 16, 2006, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Elmer B. Klein Jr. was born May 20, 1941, at Le Mars, the son of Elmer and Melinda (Plathe) Klein. Elmer was raised in the Remsen area and received his education at St. Mary's Catholic School in Remsen. He was then employed with his father in Klein Shelling and Painting in Remsen.
On Sept. 10, 1966, he married Janet Nilles at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen. They made their home in Remsen. In 1965, after the death of his father, he continued to work in the family business which in 1977 was expanded to include trucking. He also did carpenter work part-time.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Remsen, Catholic Order of Foresters and Knights of Columbus. He retired from the Remsen Fire Department in 1991 after 25 years of service.
He enjoyed fishing, playing cards, coffee time, working jigsaw puzzles, going to boat shows and attending all of the meetings and fund raisers of the organizations with which he was involved. He enjoyed his children and grandchildren and going to their activities.
Survivors include his wife, Jan of Remsen; seven daughters and one son and their families, Debi and her husband, Jody Oldenkamp of Sioux City, and their children, Derek, Nathan, Jordan and Braden; Judy and her husband, Mark Maguire of Sioux City, and their children, Kelsey and Kayla; Donna and her husband, Tom Poznanski of Sioux City and their children Emilie and Nick; Jeanne and her husband, Chad Hansen of Le Mars, and their children Tessa and Devin; Pam Klein and Cody Brandes, both of Cherokee; Pat and his wife, Molly Klein of Sioux City, and their children Grace and Rachelle; Linda Klein and her son Jonathan and her fiancÚ, Johnny Buechler, all of Sioux City; Lara Klein of Remsen; three brothers, Malcolm, Alan and his wife Lorelei, and Chuck and his wife, Joan, all of Remsen; eight sisters, Carol and her husband, Donald Ruba, Susie and her husband, Al Vaske, Marilyn Treinen and Marlys Ohlendorf, all of Remsen, Nancy and her husband, Rick Loehr of Enid, Okla., Elaine and her husband, Fred Jungers of Sheldon, Alice Klein and Norma Klein both of Stafford, Texas; three sisters-in-law, Marlene Klein of Remsen, Gerianne and her husband, George Olson of Sioux City, and Debbie Klein of San Francisco, Calif.; numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Thomas, Dennis and Donald; one sister, Mavis Kunkel; and two brothers-in-law, Fred Treinen and Donald Kunkel.
Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. today (Monday) at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Remsen with the Rev. Timothy Johnson officiating. Burial was in St. Mary's Cemetery at Remsen. Visitation was after 2 p.m. Sunday, with a parish rosary at 3 p.m., a vigil prayer service at 7:30 p.m., and a rosary at 8 p.m. by the Catholic Order of Foresters and the Knights of Columbus, all at the Fisch Funeral Home in Remsen.
Casketbearers were Kenny and Brad Klein, Chad and Ryan Ohlendorf and Jason and Mike Ruba.
Catholic Order of Forester honorary bearers were Larry Galles, Gale Haverkamp, Wayne Heidesch, Donald Konz, Duane Majeres and Mark Poeckes.
Knights of Columbus honorary bearers were Oscar Block, Steve Pick, Jeff Schiltz and John Schroeder.
