Dean Pelz, 67, of Bloomington, Minn., and a former Le Mars resident, died Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2005.
Dean was a former chairman of the music department of Le Mars Community High School from 1972 through 1988. During his tenure at Le Mars, Dean conducted the Cadet and Varsity Bands. He was the principal instructor for woodwinds at the high school.
Dean was also a member of the Sioux City Municipal Band and the Cherokee Symphony. He also served as the Le Mars Municipal Band Director.
After leaving Le Mars, Dean was chairman of the music department in Glenwood Springs, Colo.
Dean returned to Le Mars for the Le Mars Community Schools All-School Reunion in 2000, at which time he participated in conducting the Alumni Concert Band.
Dean was an avid cyclist. He was a member of Christ Presbyterian Church.
He is survived by his loving wife, Rebecca; daughter, Angela (Robert) Gast; son, Mikael Pelz; stepdaughter, Heidi (James) Bohy; stepson, Jon (Karina) Fenderson; stepson, Benjamin (Mary) Fenderson; six grandchildren; two sisters, Madalyn Stapue Traun and Linda (Bill) Burns; and a brother, Larry Pelz. He is also survived by many other relatives and friends.
He will be fondly remembered by his friends, colleagues and students.
A memorial service was held Saturday, Dec. 10, at Christ Presbyterian Church in Edina, Minn.
