Sister Margaret Clare Dreckman

Thursday, January 12, 2006

Sister Margaret Clare Dreckman, 89, of Dubuque, was called home to be with her Lord on Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006.

Armella Dreckman, the daughter of Frank and Mary (Deters) Dreckman, was born March 10, 1916, in Le Mars. Upon graduation from St. Joseph's Catholic High School in Le Mars, Armella was awarded a scholarship to Briar Cliff College, but by September she knew the Lord was calling her to the convent. She entered into the Sisters of St. Francis Jan. 24, 1935, and made her final profession of vows on Aug. 10, 1940, when she took the name Sister Margaret Clare.

Further studies resulted in a bachelor's degree in science from Briar Cliff College and a master's degree in administration from DePaul University in Chicago. Her loving ministries included teaching in Ashton, and serving as principal in Dubuque, Chicago and Midlothian, Ill., and Portland, Ore. She served as Mother Superior of her community for eight years. Following that she served as Spiritual Director at American Martyrs Retreat House in Cedar Falls, and was Associate Alumni Director at Briar Cliff College in Sioux City. She deservingly retired to Mt. St. Francis in Dubuque in 1994.

Her great loves in life were her Lord, music, card games, her Chicago Cubs, family friends, and her Franciscan Sisters with whom she shared 70 years of her life. She touched countless people with her wisdom, humor, grace, prayers, and inspiration.

She is survived by many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews, and her Franciscan sisters.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her brothers Leo, Harry, Vincent, Joseph, and Conrad, and her sisters, Sister Leota, Sister Theona, Sister Angelora, Cecelia, and Philomena, as well as a number of nieces and nephews.

We thank Hospice of Dubuque for their loving care and support.

Visitation will be held from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Sunday, with a wake service at 7:30 p.m. in the Mt. St. Francis Chapel. A celebration of her life will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Mt. St. Francis Chapel. Egelhof, Siegert & Casper Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials may be given to the Sisters of St. Francis, Dubuque, Iowa.
