Vernette E. Nagel, 88, of Le Mars, and formerly of the Rock Rapids area, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2005, at Floyd Valley Hospital in Le Mars.
Vernette Emma Nagel was born April 5, 1917, at Sioux City, the daughter of Henry and Mary (Lutzen) Ahders. She was raised in the Inwood area on the family farm. She was baptized and confirmed at Christ Lutheran Church in Alvord. She attended country school and graduated from Inwood High School in 1936.
On May 7, 1937, she married Orville H. Nagel at Storm Lake. Together, they moved to Orville's family farm near Rock Rapids, until moving to California. In 1942, they moved back to the Nagel family farm. Vernette helped on the farm and worked various jobs, including Merrill Pioneer Hospital in Rock Rapids and St. Luke's Hospital in Sioux City. In 1979, she moved to Le Mars and was employed at Westmar College.
She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also loved gardening and was an avid reader. She had a great interest in politics and world news.
Survivors include two daughters and their husbands, Mary Jane and Les Van Berkum of Le Mars and Janice and John Spyksma of Rock Rapids; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Evelyn Loger of Watsonville, Calif.; two brothers, Alvin H. and his wife, Elaine Ahders of Cloverdale, Calif., and Virgil Ahders of Garden Grove, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Jacoba Nagel of Worthington, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a son, Orville S.L. Nagel.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Roster Funeral Home of Rock Rapids with the Rev. Carla Jensen officiating. Burial will precede services at 9:30 a.m. at the Christ Lutheran Cemetery in Alvord. Visitation will be today (Tuesday) from 4 to 8 p.m., with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. at the Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids.
